In Samoa and Tonga, Sunday reorganises the week, and evening prayer reorganises the day.
Plan around Sunday rather than through it. In Tonga, Sunday rest is deeply embedded in law and daily life: most shops, transport and commercial activity stop. In Samoa, Sunday is centred on church and the family meal, and many villages also observe an evening prayer period during the week when movement through the village pauses.

Expect the country to close
Sabbath observance in Tonga is not a soft custom. Shops, most transport and ordinary commerce stop on Sunday. Hotels and their restaurants generally continue serving their own guests, and church services are open to visitors who dress properly. Book anything you need — flights, ferries, food, cash — before Saturday evening.

Samoa

Sunday in Samoa runs on church and the family lunch that follows it. If you are invited, that invitation is generous — arrive dressed formally, bring something for the table if your host says it is appropriate, and expect to eat a great deal. White clothing is common at church; a lavalava and a collared shirt or a modest dress will not look out of place.

Sa
The evening prayer curfew is real and it is short
Many Samoan villages observe sa, a short evening period of prayer, typically around dusk, signalled by a bell or a struck object. During sa people stop walking through the village, cars pull over and noise stops. If you are caught out, simply stop where you are, sit or stand quietly, and continue when the second signal sounds. It usually lasts a matter of minutes.

Church is a service, not a venue
Visitors are usually welcome at Sunday services and Samoan and Tongan congregational singing is extraordinary. It is still a service. Sit at the back, stand and sit when others do, put the phone away unless you have clearly been told it is fine, and give something at the collection.

Can I fly or take a ferry on a Sunday?
Sometimes, but do not assume it. Confirm the specific service in advance rather than relying on a timetable you found online.
Is it rude to swim on Sunday?
At a resort beach, no. Within sight of a village, in Tonga especially, it reads badly. Move away from the village or wait until Monday.
What should I wear to church?
Modest and formal. Shoulders and knees covered, no beachwear, no hats inside. A lavalava over trousers or a long skirt is always safe.
